Knitting Abbreviations, Symbols & Pattern Skill Levels

My knitting philosophy is that anyone can do any technique with the proper instructions. You may not like every technique, but you feel comfortable attempting or working it. I design my patterns with this in mind. I try very hard to keep my instructions simple enough for even a beginner, but not overly simplified so that an advanced knitter would find the directions extraneous or tedious.

Starter Level - Great pattern to start learning the art of knitting. Only skills needed are Cast On, Knit, Purl, Bind Off which can be learned by watching online videos.

Beginner Level - You know how to Cast On, Knit, Purl, K2tog, SSK and Bind Off.

Adventurous Beginner Level - You know all of the Beginner skills and are eager to learn new skills by watching online tutorials or reading stitch descriptions.

Intermediate Level - You know all of the Beginner skills as well as advanced increase/decrease techniques like YO, SK2P, Chart Reading, Cables.

Adventurous Intermediate Level - You know all of the Intermediate skills and are eager to learn new skills by watching online tutorials or reading stitch descriptions.

Advanced Level - You know all of the Intermediate skills as well as two color work like; Fair Isle, Intarsia, Double Knitting and Advanced Stitches like; nupp and bobbles.

Adventurous Advanced Level - You know all of the Advanced skills and are eager to learn new skills by watching online tutorials or reading stitch descriptions.

Expert Level - You feel very comfortable with the art of knitting and are fearless about trying new techniques.
